The federal rule this course follows (49 CFR 380, Appendix E)
First-time hazmat endorsement drivers must finish the hazardous materials theory curriculum in 49 CFR Part 380, Appendix E, before the state knowledge test. There is no minimum number of hours, but every unit must be covered. This course covers all 13 units: 1. Basic introductory HM requirements 2. Operational HM requirements 3. When do I pay?
After you pass the course. First-time endorsement? It's $69. Renewing? It's free.
Do I pay if I just want a refresher?
No. If you already have your hazmat endorsement, study free.
Is this the DMV test?
No. This is the training you take before the DMV test. The TSA background check, fingerprints and DMV test are separate steps.
Can I do it on my phone?
Yes. It works on a phone, tablet or computer.
What happens after I pass?
First time getting your endorsement? Pay the $69. We check your results and send your completion to the FMCSA registry. This can take a few hours. Renewing? There is nothing to pay or send.
What does it cost to get my hazmat endorsement, all in?
Three costs: this course, TSA, and your state DMV. This course: $0 to take it. $69 after you pass, to send it to FMCSA. TSA background check: $88.25. You pay TSA, not us. ($41 if you already have a TWIC and your state accepts it.) Your state DMV: fees are different in each state. Check your DMV's website.
Do I need this training?
Yes, if you are getting your hazmat endorsement for the first time. No, if you already had hazmat on your CDL before February 7, 2022.
Is this course good in my state?
Yes. Hazmat training is a federal rule, so it's the same in every state. Once we send your completion to FMCSA, any state DMV can see it.
Do I need this to renew my hazmat?
No. The training rule is for first-time drivers. To renew, you still redo the TSA background check. Some states also make you retake the DMV hazmat test. Check with your DMV.
How long does it all take?
The course takes about 1 to a few hours. The TSA check can take up to 60 days. The course is faster if you already know some hazmat rules. There is no set number of hours, so go at your own speed. TSA says to apply at least 60 days before you need it. Tip: start your TSA check now, while you take the course.
How do I start my TSA background check?
Apply online at TSA's hazmat page, or go to an enrollment center. Bring your ID papers. They take your fingerprints and you pay the fee. Live in FL, KY, MD, NY, PA, TX, VA or WI? Start at your DMV instead.
Can I get hazmat with a felony?
It depends on the crime and how long ago it was. TSA makes the call, not us. Some crimes block you for life, like terrorism, murder and crimes with explosives. Other crimes block you for 7 years after the conviction, or 5 years after you get out of prison. Examples are robbery, drug dealing and weapons crimes. If you're turned down, TSA has a way to appeal or ask for a waiver. Read TSA's full list before you pay for anything. This is not legal advice.
How do I know you're really on the FMCSA list?
Look us up yourself on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov). We've been listed since February 2023. FMCSA removed thousands of schools from the list in 2025 and 2026. Training from a school that was removed does not count. Always check before you pay anyone.
